Mapping the ROCK

Using advanced sonar based mapping technologies and a wide variety of vehicles, the sea floor of San Francisco Bay has been mapped in great detail. During the making of Drain Alcatraz we filmed members from the USGS (United States Geological Survey) and scientists from California State University, Monterey Bay as they mapped parts of San Francisco Bay and for the first time mapped the shallow waters around Alcatraz. This gave us a glimpse into what lies beneath one of the most ominous and dangerous bodies of water in the world. Can this explain why it was nearly impossible to escape the Rock?

Drain Alcatraz is the story behind the infamous prison but this time its secrets are being revealed on the seabed once the waters of San Francisco Bay are drained away.   

CG Recreations

Using the data collected during the multi beam survey’s of San Francisco Bay, we could take the water away and recreate the seabed using cutting edge CGI to show what lies around Alcatraz and reveal a deep gorge under the Golden Gate Bridge.
