For the first time in 60 years, the ship they call Unlucky Lady, will be able to tell her own story. THE MYSTERIOUS SINKING OF HMCS ATHABASKAN, is a one-hour documentary that captures the first journey to a Canadian warship found in European waters, and the only Canadian ship to be sunk in battle. As the divers explore this watery grave, they will try to find clues to her sinking and hopefully solve the mystery that has plagued survivors for six seven decades.
The Mystery Behind the Sinking
On April 29th, 1944, HMCS Athabaskan is hit by two massive explosions fatally wounding the Canadian warship, and sending her quickly to her watery grave at the bottom of the English Channel. It is one of Canada’s worst naval disasters; sadly, 128 young men lose their lives. The story of Athabaskan did not end with her sinking. For 70 years there has been much speculation with regards to the cause of the massive second explosion. Some believe it was an internal explosion – others believe it was a British torpedo that sank her – an act of friendly fire.
